The 3-second homepage: editing ruthlessly for conversion

Visitors decide in three seconds. We break down how a disciplined hero, one clear promise and a single call to action changed a client's numbers.

The 3-second homepage: editing ruthlessly for conversion

Every homepage is a negotiation. In the first three seconds the visitor asks one question: is this for me? Everything above the fold is either answering that or getting in the way.

We rebuilt a SaaS homepage last quarter by deleting, not adding. The old page had four messages in the hero — a headline, a subhead, a badge row and a video. The new one has a single promise and one button.

One promise, one action

When we shipped the simplified hero, time-on-page barely moved but trial signups climbed 41%. People were not reading more. They were deciding faster.

Ruthless editing is not minimalism for its own sake. It is respect for a stranger's attention.
